The Exercise Safety Association
| "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So ... catch the trade winds in your sails. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain |
The Exercise Safety Association (ESA) is a professional membership and certification organization for exercise instructors, the leaders in safety education, setting standards since 1978.
ESA has a long standing reputation of quality and experience. The Exercise Safety Association is dedicated to bringing its members the latest information, research and ideas. ESA networks fitness instructors across the United States and several foreign countries, who are truly concerned about practicing safe methods of exercise for the long term health of their participants. ESA administers the only safety certification examination in the industry and has certified over 100,000 instructors.

Mary Anne Fantauzzi, owner of Total Body
Trifecta in Saratoga Springs, has demonstrated
that "everything old is new again" with an
innovative use of an abandoned fitness prop.
Remember the lateral slide from the 1990s? If
you don't, a slide is a flat vinyl board with
bumpers on each end. Sharyn Kalinkewicz, an
ESA Certified member and charter member of
Total Body Trifecta, is pictured to the left of this
article demonstrating the Slide. The participant
wears special cloth booties over his or her
exercise shoes and begins on the bumper at one
end. He or she "pushes off," slides across the
very slippery surface, and is stopped by the
rubber bumper at the other end. Mary Anne tells
us about the class that she created, which
makes use of the Slide, the Yoga Sticky Mat, and the Body Ball to condition core muscles.

In response to many ESA certified instructor
requests, the Exercise Safety Association has
started a program that critiques popular
commercial exercise videos for elements of
safety and effectiveness. Videos are submitted
by ESA members and rated by a representative
from ESA's Advisory Board. The critique includes
rationales based on scientific guidelines and
generally accepted fitness recommendations.
The purpose of the system is to help ESA
professionals reinforce the safety information
that they learned in their primary training
programs.

In this newsletter ART150 explains Lateral Slide
Training, which has many benefits and can be
used in a variety of ways to train a number of
fitness components. However, the responsibility
for the safety of the participant and the success
of the program depends not only on the
instructor's implementation of safety
recommendations but also on the instructor's
understanding of the body mechanics and
physiology used while exercising on the Slide.
